The overheads help the crew understand where to place cameras, lights, and props on the set. They help the actors get an idea of where they'll be and how they'll move.

Overheads serve an even more important purpose that was not obvious to me at first. They were critical for securing permits for our outdoor locations. The city would not issue the permit until they could see exactly where everyone and everything would be. I had to move a camera in an overhead because it would have been in the street, which meant that we would have needed police to direct traffic. And that's just the tip of the permitting iceberg.
